Unistrut Rail Solutions - Elizabeth Line Tunnels
Striking images of the new Elizabeth Line tunnels taking shape beneath London have been revealed. In less than 18 months, until the Crossrail line opens, engineers work around the clock to install the overhead power system for the new trains. The images show engineers installing the cabling and power supply system inside the vast tunnels which run for 26 miles beneath the capital.
Each Elizabeth line train will draw power in the tunnels from a rigid “overhead catenary system” including an aluminium conductor bar housing copper wire. The bars are currently being installed in 10 metre sections. More than 1,500km of cable is being installed to supply power, lighting and ventilation systems to the new railway – about the equivalent of 100,000 double-decker buses. The main power supply in the tunnels under central London will come from two new bulk supply points, which are being built at each end of the new railway.
The images, released by Crossrail, show work being carried out in the Connaught tunnel in Docklands and the tunnels beneath the River Thames and in Stepney Green.

“The rail sector has traditionally been a key focus for us and a good fit for our product portfolio; we are very excited by the gaining of the LUL approval and goes to support the recognition of the Unistrut as a quality product and solution provider and shows our continuing focus in this growing market sector,” says Tony Kinsella, Unistrut’s Sales Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Unistrut emphasises the importance of using quality, trusted products throughout. “The integrity of any system is only as good as the individual parts,” says Paul Pryor, Unistrut’s Marketing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “It is more often the fixings that fail rather than the channel itself, and we are so confident in using the total Unistrut framing solution throughout, we back our engineered solutions with a ten-year guarantee”, says Mr Pryor.
Total Rail Solutions
Unistrut prides itself on its engineering background and, as such, offers a total service in installation design, supply, and post-production, using its own in-house engineering staff and software. It can also offer factory assembly of complete service modules, cut to length, with brackets and other components pre-mounted. These can be delivered to the site or to a subcontractor’s own factory where other elements, such as luminaires or air-handling units, may be added for fully serviced modules. This can offer cost savings in situations where on-site labour is expensive.
In addition to its world-renowned metal framing products, Unistrut cable management products include light, medium, and heavy-duty cable trays from 50mm to 900mm wide with a full range of fixings, couplers, corners, and junctions. Cable ladders are also available in standard sizes from 150mm to 900mm, but other widths are available on request.
DP Building Systems works closely with the Unistrut engineering team to design and deliver bespoke solutions that meet each customer's individual requirements.
